Heritage Open Days September 2023

Wisbech Corn Exchange Heritage Open Days 2023

Discover latest plans for Wisbech Corn Exchange. Share your memories and ideas for the future with us as we mark 60 years since The Rolling Stones played at this iconic local building!

Built in 1811, following plans by Joseph Medworth, as an Exchange Hall and Gentlemen’s Club, the Corn Exchange became home to Wisbech Town Council in 1835, where it remains resident to the present day.

The Corn Exchange became a regular place for public entertainment – from Shakespeare recitations to dancing, rollerskating, wrestling and bingo. Appearances by major figures in the 1960s include The Rolling Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lulu, Tom Jones, Adam Faith, Frankie Vaughan and The Hollies. The Corn Exchange closed in the early 1990s after initial plans to change its use to a cinema were halted. But now it’s time to repair, revitalise and relaunch Wisbech Corn Exchange!

Take a look at our video from a previous HOD event in 2018:

Last year, a Project Viability Assessment was completed (supported by The Architectural Heritage Fund), the first stage toward realising the objectives and aims of the trust. We are now planning for Stage 2, the key stage before submitting our Planning Application. It’s time for YOU to get involved and have your say in bringing Wisbech Corn Exchange back to life!

Donations are essential – please support our £2,000 fundraising goal to cover annual costs: https://www.paypal.com/GB/fundraiser/charity/4285424

  1. So many happy evenings spent there…either watching the skating (not skating as I was useless) or at the dance on Saturday night and for a while there used to be a Wednesday record hop. It was an essential place of teenagers especially in the 50s and 60s.
